New Offer! One Day Admission!

PMI Birmingham Chapter is proud to announce a new attendance option for the 2009 Alabama PMI Symposium!
Register today at this link

You spoke and we listened! In this economy, you want to have the best tools you can get to improve project performance. Some of the presentations give you the tools you need, but you cannot afford the full cost or time away from work required by the two day admission. Now, for the low cost of $175, you can register to attend one day of the Symposium.

Pick a day you wish to attend the Symposium based on your immediate needs!

Working on creating or improving your PMO? Interested in better coaching methods to enhance your team performance? Attend Day 1 and see “The Value of the PMO” by Steve Romero or “COACHING for Impact” by Debbie Lundberg.

Focused on improving your virtual team? Tired of Chapter presentations that only relate to software development? Attend Day 2 and see “Managing Virtual Teams” by Cynthia Fuller and “Learning from NASA Project Management” by Carolyn Griner.

Thanks Mom!

I’m sure most mothers and daughters talk about shopping, grandchildren and food. My mom and I like to add one more thing to that traditional topic list. We talk about managing projects. We talk about managing BIG projects. Coming from a family of rocket scientists is a chore. They always have that snappy comeback of “Why, yes. I am a rocket scientist.” Plus it’s weird when your parent has their own Wikipedia entry. However, as an adult, I shamelessly tap my mother for help when I am facing a project difficulty. Her experience with NASA projects from Apollo to Constellation provide some awesome insight into overcoming challenges. She has this great Risk Management chart that I’ve used on several projects with success once I saw it in one of her proposals. Not only that, I’ve taken things she has learned and successfully applied it to much smaller, less critical projects. Read the synopsis below and I know you will find her one of the most useful speakers you’ve heard. Register today to hear her speak on March 10th at PMI (Project Management Institute's) Alabama Symposium!

Synopsis: A brief history of the NASA program to go to the moon the first time with their challenges and lessons. Evolution through the development of the Space Shuttle and International Space Station; How the NASA culture and ways of doing PM have changed since Apollo. The development of a standard PM approach and process, including Risk Management. The Challenger and Columbia accidents and PM related root causes. The Constellation Program and human's return to the moon and beyond. What makes projects successful and what PMs leave behind as their legacy.

Meetings + Networking + Shopping + Eating = Awesome?

After an enlightening day of meetings, what better place to hang your hat than the Hilton where the Symposium is being held? For those of you who don’t get to Birmingham very often, the location is great. The Summit features some fantastic shopping and restaurants. Take 280 West and head downtown for great sightseeing. Make your .hotel reservations. Mention PMI Birmingham to get the discounted rate of $129 a night. Looking forward to meeting everyone at the Networking event. I will be the one standing at the cash bar.

1 More Tip Needed for a Base 10 Society

I’m sure you’ve been in a fair number of ineffective meetings. Paul Burek has a fabulous presentation at the Symposium on 9 tips to make your meetings more effective. I have to wonder how Paul resisted the urge to have a list composed of ten items. How can he scorn the well paved path given to us by the likes of Moses and David Letterman? I say we offer up a 10th way to make meetings more effective in the discussion session! What’s your biggest pet peeve in a group meeting? Post a comment and vent with the rest of us!
